Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in a male patient with glycogen storage disease type 1A

Alexandre Maria Ines , Gomes Ana Coelho , Oliveira Anabela , Bugalho Maria Joao

Introduction: The glycogen storage disease (GSD) is a rare disorder of carbohydrate metabolism resulting from the defective synthesis and utilization of glycogen. GSD-1a is a subtype of GSD caused by a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphatase activity, which leads to decreased conversion of glucose-6-phosphate to glucose. The dominant features at presentation are hypoglycemia and lactic acidemia. Long-term complications include blood glucose lability, lactic acidemia, short stature...

Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia induce mitochondrial dysfunction and a metabolic towards use of gluconeogenic amino acids in epithelial kidney cells

Braga Patricia , Bernardino Raquel , Guerra-Carvalho Barbara , Carrageta David F. , Rodrigues Anabela , Oliveira Pedro F. , Alves Marco

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) and insulin resistance (IR) in kidney cells are considered the main cause of end-stage renal failure. Additionally, hyperglycemia and increased fatty (FA) acids are observed in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, where lipid accumulation has been correlated to IR. Nonetheless, the impact of IR in early disease stages is still unclear. Moreover, proximal renal tubular cells have high mitochondrial content where aerobic respiration is their primary ...

Introduction: Cardiovascular changes are rare but life-threatening consequences of primary hyperparathyroidism.Case report: A 53-year-old man, with past and family history of peptic ulcer, presenting with coronary heart disease and ischemic and dilated cardiomyopathy, treated with cardiac resynchronization. He was admitted to the emergency room due to sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (MVT). Laboratory tests revealed primary hyperparathyroidi...
